Your discharge – Good care after your stay

When it’s time to leave the hospital, our treatment team will help to optimally prepare and organize your discharge. It is important to us that you also receive the best possible care after your stay.

Planning your discharge

Your discharge is coordinated in close consultation with the treatment team, who will talk to you about this early on in your stay. The responsibility for deciding when you can go home rests with your attending doctor, who will base their decision on your planned follow-up treatment. Your doctor will also provide you with the necessary prescriptions for medication and therapy, as well as rules to follow when you are back home.

The treatment team and the doctors responsible for follow-up treatment will be happy to help if you require any further information. In some wards, the Case Management team can offer support in relation to your discharge and follow-up treatment.

Day of discharge

As soon as you know your date of discharge, you can start planning your trip home. Your discharge should take place by 10:00 a.m. If this is not possible, please consult the nursing staff. You are responsible for your transportation back home. If it is not possible for you to organize transportation back home, or if you require special transportation due to restricted mobility, we will be happy to help you make the necessary arrangements. Please contact the nursing staff, who will help you book a taxi or organize transportation through the company IVB Patiententransport. Costs for transportation back home will be charged to you. If you wish to ask your health insurance to take on these charges, your doctor can provide you with a medical certificate that confirms that you require special transportation for your trip home due to restricted mobility. However, we offer no guarantee that this request to the insurance company will be successful.

Follow-up treatment

Your treatment team will discuss with you the need for and scope of possible follow-up treatment. If necessary, the staff at the University Hospital Basel will provide you with details on inpatient or outpatient follow-up care or organize a Spitex service for you. You can make requests for assistance and care at home via the Spitex hotline (+41 61 686 96 00) or through other care and support providers.
