Diagnosis

What happens if a lump is found in your breast? What are the next steps if an examination detects something suspicious? Women with suspected breast cancer want the situation clarified as soon as possible. The Breast Care Centre team looks after patients and provides essential support at every stage of treatment.

Breast Consultation

The Breast Consultation clinic in the Breast Care Centre is intended for women with benign and malignant growths. Patients with an increased risk of breast cancer are given individual advice and preventive screening. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding can also attend the clinic if they have breast problems.

You can arrange your own Breast Consultation appointment or ask your doctor to refer you. At your first appointment you will be examined by an experienced cancer specialist. Then an ultrasound will be taken of your breasts. If necessary, a biopsy (tissue sample) will be taken, guided by ultrasound. This procedure will be performed on site under local anaesthetic. The sample is analysed in the hospital’s own laboratory.

The results are assessed in our regular Tumour Conferences attended by experts from many different specialist disciplines. The suggestions for diagnostic and therapeutic measures that come from this meeting are then discussed in detail with you and your family. In this way we work with you to produce a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.
