What happens if a lump is found in your breast? What are the next steps if an examination detects something suspicious? Women with suspected breast cancer want the situation clarified as soon as possible. The Breast Care Centre team looks after patients and provides essential support at every stage of treatment.

Early detection through a screening programme

Detecting breast cancer at an early stage increases the chances of recovery, allows less invasive treatment and thus improves the patient’s quality of life. For this reason, the Breast Care Centre of University Hospital Basel participates in the mammography screening programme organised by the Canton of Basel Stadt (City of Basel).

Under this programme, women over the age of 50 are invited to preventive screening every two years. Participation in the programme is voluntary.

For this screening, the hospital has a dedicated mammography device using the very latest digital technology with a low radiation dosage. The sophisticated imaging technique even picks up small tumours before they can be detected through palpation or the emergence of other symptoms.

The screening programme is subject to extremely high quality standards which are continuously monitored and developed further. The mammograms are taken by specially trained female operators and assessed by highly experienced radiologists.
