For the medicine of the future: USB Innovation Focus

University Hospital Basel has defined seven interdisciplinary areas of focus for its clinical, research and development activities and renowned experts are expecting these to give rise to important advances for the future of medicine. With its “USB Innovation Focus” programme, University Hospital Basel aims to make a name for itself on the national and international stage and generate direct benefits for patient treatment.

A number of projects currently being explored at University Hospital Basel (USB) promise to become increasingly significant in the near future. The hospital aims to gain greater national and international recognition in these areas as part of its 2025 Strategy. It provides structural support for the projects as well as additional funding in some cases. Its objective is to strengthen interdisciplinary, translational research, i.e. projects that are based on collaboration between different departments and that generate direct benefits with regard to patient treatment.

International advisory board

USB has been able to recruit a number of renowned experts from Switzerland and abroad to its Advisory Board, which worked with the hospital management and Board of Directors to select seven “Innovation Focus” areas. USB’s clinic managers were then asked to submit bids for multi-year projects within these areas. The projects were selected using a two-part process. The Innovation Focus areas will be fixed for an initial five-year period and will be assessed regularly based on defined milestones.

University medicine for future generations too

USB is known for its research and teaching within the region of Basel, throughout Switzerland, and around the world. Its far-reaching expertise is valued by its patients and their relatives alike. As a university hospital, it is continuously developing so that it can continue to provide medicine on a university level for the next generation and establish itself as an innovative healthcare hub for the region of Basel.
