Prof. Raphael Guzman announced as new Chief Physician for paediatric and vascular neurosurgery

The Supervisory Boards of the University Hospital Basel (USB) and the University Children’s Hospital Basel (UKBB) have appointed the Deputy Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Basel as the new Chief Physician for vascular and paediatric neurosurgery.

Prof. Raphael Guzman has been named as the new Chief Physician for vascular and paediatric neurosurgery at USB and UKBB. Paediatric neurosurgery has represented an important interface between the University Hospital Basel and the University Children’s Hospital Basel since 2012. By promoting Prof. Guzman, the two hospitals are highlighting just how important this centre of competence for paediatric neurosurgery is to regional and national medical care, teaching and research. Prof. Guzman will also be responsible for vascular neurosurgery, working in close collaboration with the Stroke Center at USB.

Prof. Raphael Guzman has worked at the University Hospital Basel since 2012 and has made a name for himself during this time partly due to his passionate use of state-of-the-art technology in neurosurgery. Chief Physician and Head of Department Prof. Luigi Mariani will continue to lead the Department of Neurosurgery alongside Prof. Raphael Guzman in his new role as Chief Physician and Deputy Head of the Department.

Quote: Werner Kübler, USB Hospital Director: “In appointing Raphael Guzman, we have the pleasure of bringing an innovative clinician and scientist into a role with a great degree of responsibility.”

Quote: Marco Fischer, CEO UKBB: “The Management Board of UKBB is delighted with the appointment of Prof. Guzman as Chief Physician for paediatric neurosurgery and wishes him continued success in his new role.”
