Junior assistants and clinical traineeships in spinal surgery
We understand our academic task within the framework of scientifically sound, practical training as a permanent questioning and improvement of medical activity. With this in mind, we support and encourage an alert, inquiring attitude. We offer sub-assistant positions for a period of two to three months.
Tasks and learning objectives
You will
- work full-time.
- take medical histories under supervision and guidance.
- look after patients.
- be involved in general medical ward work.
- assist with operations.
- participate in medical research.
- take part in the on-call service for neuro/spinal surgery operations.
Learning objectives
The Department of Surgery at the University Hospital Basel is responsible for the extended basic care of a catchment area of approx. 500,000 people. Students should develop their practical skills and, at the end of the internship, be able to work as an assistant doctor in a neurosurgical or spinal surgery department.
This includes
- Dealing with patients and their relatives
- Independently taking the medical history and performing the examination
- Correctly recording status and local status
- Planning the clarifications
- Making differential diagnostic considerations
- Assessment of indicators
- Assessment of operability
- Manual skills such as wound care, performing lumbar punctures and lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainage
- Assisting with operations
- Independent performance of minor surgical procedures under supervision, introduction to suture and plaster techniques
- Organization of post-operative follow-up treatment and rehabilitation
- Case presentation at reports and on ward rounds
- Writing KG entries and reports
Terms of employment
Working hours:
- Working hours are generally based on those of the ward doctors and are strictly regulated. Regular working hours (elective operations) are fixed in both clinics and last up to a maximum of 10 hours and 45 minutes, including a 45-minute break. The earliest start time is 7 a.m., and the latest finish time is 6.30 p.m., depending on the clinic. On-call duty for surgical operations (neuro/spinal surgery) outside regular working hours is possible and would be compensated for in terms of time. We expressly draw your attention to the fact that you can expect a full workload with us.
Residence permit:
- Will be applied for by us.
Salary, insurance:
- The salary is CHF 1,200 per month. Social insurances (AHV, unemployment insurance, occupational and non-occupational accident insurance 3rd class) are deducted from this, as well as the costs for the residence permit in the first month. During their stay with us, sub-assistants are insured against occupational and non-occupational accidents and are also covered by liability insurance, but not by health insurance. You are obliged to extend your insurance cover to Switzerland.

- At your own expense and organization.
Famulants
We offer clinical traineeships in exceptional cases from the 10th semester onwards.
The differences
- Clinical traineeships are unpaid.
- Participation in the on-call service is voluntary.
- The following also applies to clinical trainees: you can expect a full workload
