Research

Modern ophthalmology requires highly precise, safe and gentle technologies. Thanks to the close collaboration with the new IOB research institute, our clinicians are working hand in hand with basic researchers to better understand eye diseases and develop new therapies to combat vision loss.

Main research areas

The Eye Clinic of the University Hospital Basel is involved in research as well as academic training.

In research, the spectrum ranges from basic research to clinical research. For many years, there has been little innovation in ophthalmology, partly due to a lack of understanding of basic disease mechanisms and partly due to a lack of connection between basic research. The new Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) in Basel aims to fill this gap - thanks to close collaboration with the Eye Clinic.

On December 15, the University Hospital Basel, together with the University of Basel and Novartis, founded the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB). At the new research institute, basic researchers and clinicians are working hand in hand to gain a better understanding of eye diseases and to develop new therapies to combat vision loss. The IOB is one of the first institutes of its kind in the world to build a bridge between the laboratory and the clinic.

The new institute is headed by two world-renowned experts in the field of basic and clinical research: Prof. Botond Roska and Prof. Hendrik Scholl.
