Everything to do with pregnancy and birth

From May 22 to 26, the Women's Clinic's "Birth Theme Week" will be all about pre- and postnatal care, possible complications and their treatment options. Every day shortly before midday, specialists on Radio Basilisk will answer frequently asked questions from patients and provide information about the range of services on offer relating to pregnancy and childbirth.

Which women have an increased risk of pre-eclampsia and how can this be determined? What can I expect at the first major ultrasound during pregnancy? What kind of care will I receive during the birth? How is gestational diabetes treated? Do women often have to go to hospital even before the birth has started?

It's worth listening in!

In the maternity ward of the University Hospital Basel, your well-being and safety are the focus. This is ensured by our competent team in collaboration with experienced neonatologists from the University Children's Hospital Basel (UKBB) and - if necessary - with specialists from other disciplines also represented at the University Hospital Basel.

Obstetricians, midwives, anaesthetists and nurses work hand in hand and in constant communication, focusing on the individual needs of expectant mothers and their safety. In addition, the team at the Women's Clinic looks after you around the clock. A senior physician and a pediatrician are always present. In the event of an anesthetic or caesarean section, an anesthetist is on site 24 hours a day.

What is pre-eclampsia anyway? Which people have an increased risk of it?

If there is a risk of pre-eclampsia or pregnancy poisoning or if pre-eclampsia has occurred in previous births, an analysis of the risk factors and a detailed proposal for pregnancy monitoring can be discussed in a one-off consultation.

PD Dr. Gwendolin Manegold-Brauer

What can women expect during their first major ultrasound during pregnancy? What happens in the event of abnormalities, such as cytomegaly, a virus that can be transmitted during pregnancy, and when is it advisable to donate umbilical cord blood after the birth? PD Dr. Gwendolin Manegold Brauer answers these and more questions in the FAQ video.

At the University Hospital Basel we offer ultrasound examinations during pregnancy as well as gynecological ultrasound examinations. Ultrasound is a diagnostic technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the internal organs.

It is possible for you to donate the umbilical cord blood after birth and thus save the lives of other children.

Prof. Olav Lapaire

Prof. Olav Lapaire answers important questions about childbirth care and the WHO and UNICEF "Baby-friendly Hospital" label, which the University Hospital Basel bears.

Every year, over 2,700 children are born at our hospital, making us the hospital with the most births in the region. We pass on the experience we have gained from this directly and competently to you and try to make your birth experience as positive as possible.

The University Hospital Basel bears the "Baby friendly hospital" label of the WHO and UNICEF. This is not least because a team of certified lactation consultants and the postpartum team look after the needs of mothers and provide them with great support before they go home together as a new family.

Dr. Cécile Monod

Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin or to use the insulin it produces to keep blood sugar levels within the normal range. During pregnancy, hormonal changes lead to an increased insulin requirement in the mother. The resulting increase in blood sugar levels then also affects the child. The pregnant woman also has an increased risk of various pregnancy complications.

With our obstetrics service, you will be accompanied through the birth independently and on your own responsibility by the midwives. If necessary, medical support can be called in quickly around the clock.

Midwife-led birth in hospital is already an established model of care in other countries, which is supported by international studies regarding its benefits. If you are interested in a midwife-led birth at the University Hospital Basel, we offer you a preliminary consultation around the 36th week of pregnancy to discuss the options and your questions.
