Research

Research in the Department of Pathology at the University Hospital Basel (USB) combines basic experimental research and applied, clinically oriented research under one roof, with a focus on tumor research and neurosciences. The institute's research department currently employs eleven postdoctoral researchers, 15 biology doctoral students and several master's students of medicine and biology in addition to the pathology doctors working in research. They are supported by professionally trained laboratory staff and have access to state-of-the-art technologies as well as specialized laboratories for immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, genomic analyses, FACS and cell biology. A total of four structural professorships are located in the Department of Pathology USB: Stem Cell Pathology (Prof. Lukas Bubendorf), Neuro- and Muscle Pathology (Prof. Stephan Frank), Experimental Pathology (currently vacant) and Pathology (Prof. Markus Tolnay).

Within the scope of contract research, the pathology department of the USB is also a sought-after partner for industry (pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, etc.). Further information on the subject of research can be found on the website of our research department.
