Teaching

The term pathology comes from the Greek and means "the study of suffering". A central role in medical education, further education and training is therefore an important part of our work. We are involved in interdisciplinary student teaching, but also in numerous internal and external training events with a particular focus on promoting young talent.

After completing their 3rd year of study, we offer medical students the opportunity to gain a comprehensive insight into the field of pathology as part of the two-day course "Pathology intensive: from biopsy to gene mutation". After attending the week-long course, graduates should be able to decide whether they would like to train as a specialist in pathology. Please register for the course three months in advance with Ms. Petra Huber.

Students of human medicine in the 1st to 3rd year of their Master's degree can gain an in-depth insight into our specialist field as part of the elective project "Pathology: close to the patient - diagnosing and understanding diseases".

We recommend that students who wish to pursue a career in pathology attend an entire month of electives.

The Department of Pathology at the University Hospital Basel is an FMH-recognized training center:

  • Specialist in pathology: Category A (4 years)
  • Specialization in cytopathology: Category A (1 year)
  • Specialization in molecular pathology: Category A (1 year)
  • Interdisciplinary specialization in neuropathology: Category A (3 years)
