The Skin Cancer Center at the University Hospital Basel was founded to offer patients holistic and comprehensive therapy and support for their skin cancer. The University Hospital Basel has a long and successful tradition of diagnosing and treating skin cancer. In addition, the University Hospital Basel also conducts basic and clinical research in the field of skin cancer.

The patient benefits directly from the excellent cooperation of a wide range of specialists who can make a positive contribution to skin cancer patients. In addition to basic care, we also offer patients top-notch medical services.

Our proximity to academia and research guarantees that we stay current on the medical knowledge, and rely on the latest and most effective therapy strategies and international exchange. The regular members of the interdisciplinary conferences are doctors from the fields of dermatology, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, oncology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, pathology, genetics and radiology.

The aim of the Skin Cancer Center is to determine the safest and fastest, but also the least burdensome, diagnosis for skin cancer patients in a given constellation.  The holistic therapy is planned in accordance with international guidelines, by agreement of all members of the Skin Cancer Center. Furthermore, we determine the optimal and most sensible cancer follow-up care for patients and identify specific care partners for further support of the patients.

The Skin Cancer Center is constantly updating its knowledge about skin cancer treatment and incorporating new findings directly into the care approach. The expert group also deals with the early detection of all skin cancers and has the appropriate technologies to achieve this goal. The members of the center are also responsible for the continuous training on skin cancer diseases.

The Skin Cancer Center at the University Hospital Basel offers patients all scientifically documented treatment options that are proven to be effective. In addition to surgical procedures to remove skin tumors and ensure optimum recovery, other modern options are laser and soft X-ray therapies. Radiosurgery and local immune treatments are also part of our range of services. If the patient wishes, we also work with alternative medicine therapists, as long as the respective method can be used together with conventional medicine.

These forms of therapy are particularly suitable for localized tumors. The treatment of facial skin tumors is of particular importance. Patients with advanced skin cancer and metastases often require whole-body therapies with pills or infusions. This chemotherapy is carried out by cancer specialists (oncologists). In the case of melanoma, groundbreaking new chemotherapy options have been introduced in recent years and are being administered by our oncologists. Modern radiotherapy with all the techniques is another pillar for patients with extensive and advanced skin cancers.

The decision as to which type of therapy should be carried out in patients with complex skin cancers is made at an interdisciplinary cancer conference with all specialists.
