Pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMF) patients, their parents and caregivers benefit from an improved process, as all outpatient and inpatient care is offered under one roof.
Every year, Prof. Dr. med. med. dent. Andreas Müller and Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Benito Benitez and their team carry out around 2,000 consultations every year. The consultation hours serve the optimal treatment of congenital malformations in the mouth, jaw and facial area. There is a separate consultation for children with head deformities and for treatment with head prostheses. All necessary disciplines are involved: Speech correction, specialized care, ENT medicine and orthodontics. A specialist also ensures that registrations and treatments run smoothly.
Under the professional leadership of Prof. Dr. med. med. dent. Andreas Müller, the UKBB has expanded pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery with outpatient services. Pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery remains part of the Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Basel site (Head Physician, University Hospital Basel: Prof. Dr. mult. Florian M. Thieringer). The existing oral and maxillofacial team at the USB will remain and will now work at the UKBB.
As a result, the UKBB will also have a new department: Craniofacial Surgery, which will be co-directed with Neurosurgery by Prof. Raphael Guzman and Prof. Dr. med. med. dent. Andreas Müller. Thus, a comprehensive cleft and craniofacial center arises at the UKBB, which combines the specific services of pediatric neurosurgery and the University Center for Cleft Lip and Palate and Facial Malformations for anomalies in the head area.
