Organization and management
The Board of Directors has been the highest management body of the University Hospital Basel since 2012. The hospital management consists of five members under the leadership of the hospital director. The members of the hospital management are responsible for operational management.The Medical Directorate (Medical Directorate and Nursing/MTT Directorate), the Human Resources Directorate, the Finance Directorate and the Processes, Management and Development Directorate as well as the Operations, Digitalization & ICT and Real Estate departments support the core medical business.
Organization of the core medical business
The organizational structure of the University Hospital Basel is geared towards providing university-based, patient-oriented medicine of the highest quality. Since 2021, the clinics have been organized into medical departments, which have been defined based on organ- and disease-related synergies. The medical centers are interdisciplinary and interprofessional. They provide care to patients with certain complex diagnoses and coordinate their work closely with their needs.
The Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is the highest governing body of the University Hospital Basel. It is elected by the Basel-Stadt cantonal government (current term of office: 2020 to 2023). The Board of Directors elects the hospital director and the hospital management.

The hospital management
The hospital management is responsible for operational management. It comprises the Medical Director, the Director of Nursing/MTT, the Director of Finance and the Director of Human Resources under the leadership of the Hospital Director. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine has a permanent seat on the Hospital Management Board.

Dr. med. Werner Kübler, MBA, is Hospital Director and Chairman of the Hospital Management. He is responsible for the operational management of the University Hospital Basel.
Together with his staff, the Hospital Director is committed to providing medical treatment that focuses on the interests and well-being of patients. His management principles include ensuring that the University Hospital Basel acts sustainably, economically and in accordance with ethical principles, as described in his vision.
The management staff
The management team supports the hospital director and hospital management with strategic issues and projects. The Corporate Development department is responsible for the fundamentals of strategic corporate management and looks after strategic partners and collaborations. The Marketing & Communication department is responsible for all marketing, internal and external communication tasks. It is also happy to receive media inquiries.

Legal service
This specialist unit supports, represents and advises all employees and organizational units of the University Hospital Basel on legal issues. For patients, the legal service is the point of contact for all patient law issues, in particular in potential liability cases.

Compliance
Compliance provides advice and support on issues relating to internal and external regulations, directives and laws. It is your point of contact for confidential reports on grievances and breaches of internal or external regulations.
External Affairs
External Affairs supports the Directorate in organizing and maintaining networks with the University Hospital's external stakeholder groups. It analyzes the interests of the various stakeholder groups at the interface between society, politics and business and derives recommendations for action.

Sustainability department
The Sustainability Office ensures that the topic of sustainability is permanently anchored within the University Hospital Basel. It ensures that the importance of a sustainability strategy and the procedures derived from it are known and understood throughout the hospital. It is responsible for bringing corporate divisions and functions together on the topic, initiating and supporting sustainability initiatives, monitoring their progress and communicating results. As a representative of the topic of sustainability both internally and externally, she ensures the transfer of knowledge and the establishment of best practices.

The University Partnership Coordination Office supports the Board of Directors, the Hospital Director and the Hospital Management in their dealings with the Faculty of Medicine and the University of Basel.It is the information and contact point for clinical professors and the organizational units of the University Hospital Basel with regard to these topics and the national associations unimedsuisse University Medicine Switzerland and H+ Swiss Hospitals.
