Nutritional advice and therapy
Our nutritional consultations and therapies are based on your individual needs and are scientifically sound. We advise and care for inpatients and outpatients on medical referral.
Interprofessional collaboration and further training
We apply our evidence-based, practical expertise to patients with complex clinical pictures in interprofessional collaboration. We offer further training for the interdisciplinary treatment team.
Practice development and training
We are part of internal working groups such as the Patient Catering Expert Committee and the Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Working Group (AGEPE). We work on internal treatment concepts and care guidelines in order to maintain and improve the quality of our work for the benefit of our patients.
Metabolic Nutrition Team (MET)
The metabolic nutrition team supports our patients in outpatient consultations as part of a multi-professional treatment team for the following diseases, among others:
- Metabolic diseases e.g. diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes
- Obesity (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2)
- Overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2), which is associated with a secondary disease that can be favorably influenced by weight reduction
- Cardiovascular diseases e.g. hypertension, dyslipidemia
- Kidney diseases
- Eating disorders
Clinical nutrition team (KET)
The aim of clinical nutrition is to ensure optimal nutritional care for our patients. Our expertise is aimed at people with:
- Malnutrition, e.g. as a result of tumor disease, neurological diseases or in multimorbid disease situations
- Artificial nutrition (enteral and/or parenteral nutrition)
- Operations on the digestive tract, e.g. gastric resection, Whipple operation, small bowel resection
- Stem cell transplantation
- Lung diseases e.g. cystic fibrosis, COPD
- Metabolic diseases e.g. protein metabolism disorders, urea cycle disorders
- Severe eating disorders (multi-professional treatment team)
Internal guidelines on clinical nutrition can be found on the intranet under nutritional advice.

Treatment program for obesity with a focus on nutritional behavior and lifestyle changes (BASEL program)
BASEL = treatment programfor obesity(significant overweight) with a focus on nutritional behaviorand lifestyle changes.
BASEL is a cognitive-behavioral therapy-oriented program for people with obesity. It is based on the American treatment program "The LEARN® Program for Weight Control". The program was translated in 2000 at the University Hospital Basel, adapted to Swiss conditions and scientifically evaluated. The course has an interprofessional structure with a nutritionist, a psychologist and a specialized physiotherapist.
In 26 lessons, including 8 lessons of exercise, over the course of six months, course participants learn the basics and strategies for new behaviors with the aim of making lasting changes to their lifestyle and thus their weight. Before the start of the program, the introductory lesson serves to introduce the program, its contents and working methods as well as to familiarize participants with the time commitment involved. A follow-up meeting takes place three months after the end of the program.
In each lesson, a topic from the modules of nutrition, eating behavior, self-observation, dealing with difficulties and physical activity is addressed. In addition to imparting knowledge, techniques and strategies for changing behavior are taught, which the participants gradually implement in their everyday lives.
Course participants really appreciate the combination of nutrition, psychology and exercise. Course participants find it a great advantage to work on individual goals in one or more areas, such as balance (nutrition), snacking in between meals (behavior) or increasing physical activity by learning exercises suitable for everyday use. The module on dealing with difficulties is very supportive. Course participants are empowered to learn from slip-ups instead of losing motivation.
