Further training as a specialist in intensive care medicine

As a central hospital in the region of Northwestern Switzerland, our interdisciplinary intensive care unit covers all pathologies with the exception of severe burns, including part of transplantation medicine.

The intensive care unit is certified by the SIWF and recognized by the Swiss Society for Intensive Care Medicine (SGI) as a category Au training facility.

Intensive care medicine trainees can complete up to three years of further training with us. During their training, they rotate between all four units of the intensive care unit, where they work in a smaller team consisting of a senior doctor and a maximum of two assistant doctors. This provides them with intensive bedside teaching. In addition to clinical training, structured theoretical training takes place three times a week, including further training in ultrasound with a focus on transthoracic echocardiography. The intensive care unit team is also jointly responsible for resuscitations throughout the hospital.

Of the 27 training positions, 8 are currently reserved for intensive care medicine trainees. Applications with different medical backgrounds will be considered (anesthesiology, internal medicine, other). In accordance with the recommendation of the SGI, applicants must have at least two years of general training when starting in our intensive care unit.

Our rotation positions are reserved for internal applicants from the University Hospital Basel's Departments of Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery and Cardiology. It is therefore not possible for external applicants to apply for a rotation position.

If you have any questions or are interested in training as a specialist in intensive care medicine, please send your questions or application including your CV by e-mail to Dr. Nadine Cueni, Deputy Chief Physician and Head of the Intensive Care Medicine Training Centre(nadine.cueni@usb.ch).

Internal applicants for a rotation position on the intensive care unit as a specialist in anaesthesia, surgery, internal medicine or cardiology should contact the relevant clinics directly.
