Breast Center as a model of success

The Breast Center at the University Hospital Basel was the first center in northwestern Switzerland to receive both the Swiss quality certificate (Q-Label, 2013) and the quality certificate of the German Cancer Society (DKG, 2015).

Patients with breast cancer are treated individually and sensitively at the University Hospital of Basel (USB). Thanks to our holistic approach to treatment, we were once again awarded quality certificates from Switzerland and Germany in September 2020. Your patient will be accompanied by our Breast Care Nurses:

  • We will organize a psycho-oncological or social services consultation if your patient requires it.
  • We offer genetic counseling to high-risk patients (without a breast cancer diagnosis, only with cost reimbursement).
  • If your breast cancer patient has a positive family history, she can take a genetic test using the so-called fast-track procedure.
  • Younger patients whose family planning is not yet complete benefit from fertility and fertility counseling in our Center.

These services are standard for us. What will also convince you as a treating physician or a patient is that we develop many groundbreaking treatment standards in breast cancer therapy ourselves as part of international consensus conferences. Furthermore, by participating in studies, your patient can benefit today from the therapies of tomorrow (e.g. Taxis study - initiated by Prof. Walter P. Weber).

Aditionally, it is a fact that we are national and international leaders in surgical techniques: Instead of using conventional wire (often perceived as painful and unpleasant by the patient), we mark non-palpable lesions using gentle SEEDs (iodine-125-active clip, only available from us in Switzerland), for example.

It is absolutely crucial that lymph nodes affected by cancer cells can be specifically marked in advance and selectively removed during focused axillary surgery. We also carefully weigh up the surgical technique. It must lead to the oncologically safe removal of the breast cancer, but an aesthetically pleasing result is equally important to us. We are also a global leader in this area: we have developed many of the oncoplastic techniques ourselves and validated them in our global committees. Each operation is individually adapted to the patient's wishes and oncological feasibility. We are the only center in northwestern Switzerland able to offer direct immediate reconstruction with prostheses or autologous tissue after any form of mastectomy (for breast cancer patients) or as prophylaxis (for BRCA 1/2). For your patient, this means only one operation instead of two.

We treat more than 200 patients with a initial diagnosis of breast cancer every year. Time and again, we succeed in combining evidence-based information with the needs, values and preferences of your patient. For this purpose, we work systematically with "Patient Reported Outcome Measures" (PROMs). Our success is reflected in the above-average level satisfaction of patient with our center. This is important to us, because the quality of life and the wishes of each individual patient are close to our hearts.

We are always happy to exchange ideas with you - whether on these topics in general or specifically on your patient. Please contact us for this. In addition, we are happy to offer you the option of operating on your patient together with you in our hospital. In addition, we can take over the treatment of your patient at the USB or only set it up for an agreed period of time if you want to take over the further care again partially or completely.
