Sub-assistants in dermatology

As an undergraduate assistant in dermatology, you will have the opportunity to get to know this specialist field in both outpatient and inpatient settings. You will go through a structured curriculum with weekly learning objectives in order to benefit optimally from this sub-assistance. You will also have the opportunity to carry out a small scientific project.

The working day starts at 8.00 a.m. (on Mondays with the report) and ends at around 5.00 p.m.. Participation in night and weekend shifts is not planned. As a junior assistant, you will share the regular daily routine of a junior doctor, including attending reports, interdisciplinary meetings and internal training courses.

The Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Basel offers internships (in the elective year of study or in the practical year PJ) lasting 1 to 4 months:

  • one to three-month internships for Swiss medical students in their elective year of study
  • three to four-month internships for students from EU and EFTA countries

Learning objectives

  • You will learn how to apply the theory of efflorescence correctly, how to perform a dermatological examination independently and how to recognize the most common dermatological clinical clues (e.g. Hobelspan phenomenon, apple jelly sign, Auspitz phenomenon etc.) and examinations (diascopy, dermographism, dermatoscopy, direct preparations, curettage, biopsies) under the guidance of an assistant doctor.
  • You will learn about the most common dermatological clinical pictures and their treatment options.
  • You will gain an insight into ward work, physical therapies (cryotherapy, electrocautery, radiotherapy, laser therapy, light therapy) and allergology.
  • Towards the end of the sub-residency, you will be able to care for dermatology patients under supervision.
  • If you are particularly interested: Writing a small scientific paper, which could possibly be developed into a dissertation.
  • Learning theoretical and practical skills in the care of day clinic patients (such as assessment of wounds, basic phlebological assessment, wound treatment, light therapy or treatment of chronic skin diseases).

Tasks

  • Active collaboration in the outpatient clinic: care of patients under supervision and independent preparation of medical documentation
  • Active collaboration in the ward: patient care, examinations, therapy planning, medical documentation
  • Participation and active support in various dermatological operations such as spindle excisions or flap plastics
  • Carrying out diagnostic and therapeutic biopsies / curettage / shave excisions and physical therapies (including cryotherapy) under supervision
  • Assisting with consultations in the hospital (including biopsies, photo documentation, visits)

  • 4 places per month (divided into two 1-month sub-assistants and two tertial assistants).

Dermatology interns can work with us in the following areas:

  • in the outpatient clinic/outpatient clinic
  • in the ward
  • in the operating theater
  • in light therapy/laser therapy/radiotherapy
  • in the surgery/medicine consultation service
  • in the wound outpatient clinic/day clinic
  • in the Margarethenklinik (the only university clinic for aesthetic dermatology in Switzerland; offer only applies to tertial assistants)
  • in allergology

Rotation opportunities

1-month sub-assistant:

You will spend half of the employment period in our outpatient clinic and the other half on the dermatology ward.

Tertial assistants:

According to the work schedule and depending on the length of stay:

  • at least 1 month in the outpatient clinic
  • at least 1 month on the ward
  • At least 1 month in the care of our functional assistants
