Junior assistants and clinical traineeships in orthopaedics and traumatology
Tasks and learning objectives
You will

Learning objectives
The University Hospital Basel is responsible for the extended basic care of a catchment area of approx. 500,000 people. Students will gain an insight into the basic surgical care of the urban catchment area and the special aspects of center surgery. They should develop their practical skills and, at the end of the internship, be able to work as an assistant doctor in a surgical department.
This includes
- Dealing with patients and their relatives
- Independently taking the medical history and performing the examination
- Correctly recording status and local status
- Planning the clarifications
- Making differential diagnostic considerations
- Assessment of indicators
- Assessment of operability
- Manual skills such as wound care, placement of venous lines
- Assisting with operations
- Independent performance of minor surgical procedures under supervision, introduction to suture and plaster techniques
- Post-operative aftercare and rehabilitation
- Carrying out diagnostic and therapeutic measures
- Presenting cases at reports and on ward rounds
- Writing KG entries and reports
Rotation and program duration
Monthly rotation
Students take an active part in the daily work of the clinic in monthly rotations in various departments. This includes activities in the department, in consultation hours and in the operating theater, daily participation in reports and training events as well as in meetings on surgical indicators. After training, independent supervision of a surgical department under the guidance of a senior physician is possible.
The rotation includes the following clinics:
- Emergency Center
- Vascular Surgery
- University Heart Center
- Oral and maxillofacial surgery
- Plastic, reconstructive, aesthetic and hand surgery
- Orthopaedics/Traumatology
- Thoracic surgery
- Urology
- Visceral surgery
We take preferences regarding rotation into account where possible, but cannot guarantee a desired allocation.
Program duration
Two to four months, from the first day of the month to the last day of the last month.

The differences:
- The clinical traineeships are unpaid.
- Participation in the on-call service is voluntary (once a month on a working day).
- The following also applies to clinical trainees: you can expect a full workload with us.
