Episode 1

Understanding breast cancer better: Diagnosis, treatment & questions

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. We talk to Prof. Dr. Walter Weber about how diagnosis and treatment are carried out today, what decisions patients have to make and how modern medicine, research and interdisciplinary collaboration shape treatment.

How dangerous is breast cancer really today? We explain, take uncertainties seriously and show why there is reason for hope. We also find out the very personal reason why Prof. Dr. Walter Weber has chosen this profession.

In the case of unclear findings or palpable changes, we usually make appointments for clarification within a few days. For purely early detection examinations without symptoms, we usually schedule appointments within 4-6 weeks.

Prof. Walter Weber is a specialist and titular professor of surgery. From 2013 to 2017, he headed the Breast Center at the University Hospital Basel, where he also studied and completed his clinical training. He trained as a breast surgeon at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA.

Since 2014, he has focused exclusively on patients with breast diseases and has been head of the breast surgery team since 2015. He has founded the largest network of breast cancer specialists from surgery and radiotherapy and patient representatives from all over the world called the Oncoplastic Breast Consortium (OPBC). With the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation, he is leading two international phase III studies to modernize breast surgery by developing new oncoplastic surgical techniques on the one hand and by de-escalating axillary surgery on the other.

With the OPBC consensus conferences, he also develops the globally valid surgical standards for breast surgery, which are regularly published in renowned specialist journals.

His clinical focus is on oncoplastic breast surgery and his aim is to achieve optimal aesthetic results with the corresponding patient satisfaction and quality of life in addition to oncological safety.

He also applies the latest evidence from the specialist literature to consistently avoid overtreatment of patients with breast cancer, for example in armpit surgery.

Episode 2

Understanding menopause better: Symptoms, treatment & answers

The menopause affects every woman sooner or later - and yet it is still often not talked about enough.

We talk to Dr. Ursula Gobrecht-Keller, Head of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endocrinology at the University Hospital Basel, about what happens in the body during the peri- and menopause, why the symptoms can be so varied and what is medically treatable.

Hot flushes, sleep disorders, mood swings, "brain fog", joint pain or changes in libido: We categorize typical symptoms, explain when it makes sense to seek clarification (and what can also have other causes) and which therapies can help - from hormone treatments to alternatives for women who are not allowed to take hormones. We also look at taboos, how to deal with them in the community and why more research into gender medicine is so important.
