Offer

We support, advise and treat cancer patients individually and according to the latest scientific findings. As part of our university mission, we are involved in teaching and research.

Onkologie

In the outpatient consultation, cancer patients are cared for and advised before, during and after drug-based cancer therapies. This is done in close cooperation with the general practitioners and other specialists involved.

We offer patients and their relatives comprehensive advice about their illness and treatment options and then - together with you - put together an individual treatment plan.

Many chemotherapies are administered on an outpatient basis. The necessary blood tests and any supportive therapies (bone strengthening, blood transfusions, etc.) are also offered on an outpatient basis as part of this consultation.

Together with the general practitioners, we also look after patients after tumor therapy with regard to specific therapy- or tumor-associated problems.

Patients or referring physicians can register for a second medical opinion via the Oncology Office.

Short-term hospital stays

Chemotherapy lasting several days can be administered on an inpatient basis from Monday to Friday in a specialized department, the short-term medical clinic.

Inpatient care

Longer inpatient stays for clarifications or therapies as well as in emergencies take place in the Medical Clinic with oncological consultant care.

The oncology doctor on duty is available for you at all times:

Most modern cancer therapies require the knowledge and skills of specialists from various disciplines. At our center hospital, we have the opportunity to consult directly and easily with all specialists on a daily basis.

Interdisciplinary tumor boards are held regularly (1 - 2 times a week) in the following treatment centers.

More knowledge about psycho-oncology in general:

Being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing the necessary treatment often has a serious impact on the lives of those affected and their families. The time before, during and after cancer treatment places varying demands on both the body and the psyche of the patient.

In addition to the physical problems, cancer patients often also have to contend with major psychological stress. The diagnosis may be experienced as a shock, and anxiety, depression and feelings of insecurity or exhaustion may occur. These feelings are initially to be understood as completely normal reactions to the great burden of the treatment.

For most patients, the support of family and friends is most important during this time. It can also be helpful to seek professional psycho-oncological support.

Psycho-oncological care ranges from short-term counseling to longer-term psychotherapy. Psycho-oncological care is determined by the needs of cancer patients: Some want to try alternative ways of dealing with everyday life, others want to learn to deal with difficult situations more calmly, others want to understand things better and organize them for themselves or take stock.
Depending on the situation and concerns, patients can also be referred to therapists in private practice after one or more consultations.

Psycho-oncological support through individual, couple or family discussions:

  • As an information and counseling session in all phases of an illness
  • In acute crises
  • When coming to terms with the illness
  • When coping with the consequences of the illness
  • When dealing with anxiety, depressive reactions, traumatic experiences
  • Advice on dealing and communicating with children, the environment, employers
  • For referral to psychosocial counseling centers, outpatient psychotherapists, self-help groups

The inpatient and outpatient care provided by psycho-oncologists is paid for by the health insurance companies.

As a rule, the doctor or nurse in charge will refer you to psycho-oncology after consulting you. This also applies to your doctor in private practice.

Ask your attending doctor or nurse or contact the secretariat on +41 61 265 52 94 between 9.00-12.00 and 14.00-16.00.

Our nursing experts work every day to ensure that patients and their relatives are well looked after. They not only have specialized oncological training and a broad knowledge of cancer therapies, but also a great deal of experience, a sympathetic ear and many practical tips for all problems and concerns relating to cancer and therapies.

Side effects of therapy and effects on the everyday lives of patients and their relatives

Nausea, changes in taste, lack of appetite and, in particular, fatigue are often at the forefront. We provide patients and relatives with the necessary information to reduce/prevent the consequences of illness and therapy in a direct discussion.

Aids

We are happy to answer questions about the procurement of hair replacement and other aids such as breast prostheses or "emergency watches" for use at home.

Support at home / Onko-Spitex

Several oncology employees also work in "Onko-Spitex". If you have any questions about the services available in your home environment, we will be happy to help you with information about the services available at your place of residence

Living will

We offer advice on drawing up living wills. The University Hospital Basel is co-author of the Basel living will, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Internet. You can also contact GGG Voluntas for information about an individual living will.

Networks for cancer patients

As we know the entire network relevant for tumor patients and their relatives, we can also advise you on other services such as the cancer leagues of both Basel, Aargau and Solothurn, self-help groups or the hospices of Northwestern Switzerland in Basel, Arlesheim and Brugg.

STREAM actively alleviates stress

STREAM is a scientifically tested online program to offer support in dealing with stress during a cancer illness.
