Stroke Center
«Time is brain» is an expression often used in connection with a stroke. This is exactly what the emergency treatment of a stroke is all about: Often, a few minutes determine whether the brain cells whose blood flow has been cut off survive or not. As a result, strokes are the most common cause of permanent disability in adults.

News from the Stroke Center
Services
The term «stroke» (also known as: cerebrovascular accident) refers to a functional failure of an area of the brain caused by arteriosclerosis of the cerebral arteries (also known as «arterial calcification»). A stroke as a result of bleeding caused by bursting of a blood vessel is less common.
In Switzerland, around 15,000 people suffer a stroke every year. All age groups may be affected, but the risk increases with age. A health-conscious lifestyle reduces the likelihood of a stroke – patients with high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, and smokers are at greater risk.
The Stroke Center at the University Hospital Basel is one of nine certified stroke centers in Switzerland and offers patients immediate and comprehensive treatment. A coordinated evaluation and treatment approach enables all patients to receive care in accordance with specific quality requirements.
