Medical Genetics deals with the causes, diagnosis and risk assessment of genetic diseases before and after birth. As part of the University of Basel, it covers its specialist area in teaching and conducts clinically oriented basic research.

In einer wegweisenden Entscheidung der Spitalleitung wurde Prof. Mira Katan als Leiterin des Stroke Centers am Universitätsspital Basel gewählt. Damit schreibt sie Geschichte als die erste Frau in der Schweiz, die ein Stroke Center leitet, und tritt die Nachfolge von Prof. Urs Fischer neben Prof. Marios Psychogios (Co-Leitung) an.

Fortunately, there were no casualties. Late in the evening of 9 October 2023, there was a fire on the fourth floor of Clinic 1. According to current knowledge, a tea kettle started the fire, which was quickly extinguished. A large group of company fire brigade USB, professional fire brigade, paramedics, emergency medical services, police and security USB were on site. Fourteen people, including 11 patients, were evacuated from the vicinity of the fire and were medically examined. No one suffered smoke inhalation or other injuries. All patients can be placed elsewhere in the USB while the affected rooms are cleaned and repaired. This may take a few days. The hospital management would like to thank all those involved for their calm and courageous efforts.

University Hospital Basel achieved a new first in August by implanting a patient with an artificial calvaria (skull cap), produced specifically for him in-house at USB. After many years of research and development, USB has succeeded in becoming the first hospital in Europe to produce 3D-printed implants that meet the requirements of international standards for medical devices.
