The focal points of our center are

- Infections of joint prostheses
- Infections after bone fractures
- Infections in diabetic foot syndrome

These infections usually have a major impact on the lives of the people affected. As part of an interdisciplinary team, we draw up a specific diagnosis and treatment plan for each patient based on the latest scientific findings. In doing so, we take into account the patient's individual medical history, concomitant illnesses and wishes.

We support, advise and treat our patients in close cooperation with pre-treatment physicians, general practitioners and rehabilitation clinics. Thanks to our lively clinical and scientific activities, we are also well networked nationally and internationally.

In our interdisciplinary infectious diseases consultation, we advise and treat patients with infections of the musculoskeletal system or suspected infections. These include infections of the bone (osteomyelitis), joints (arthritis), joint prostheses (periprosthetic infections, PJI for short) and infections following bone fractures (fracture-associated infections, FRI for short).
As our patients often already have a long medical history, we require a referral from the doctor who previously treated them, including all documentation and x-rays, in order to provide optimal treatment.
The consultation is run by the interdisciplinary team at the Center for Musculoskeletal Infections.

Consultation hours: Tuesday (from 09:00 - 12:00 /13:00 to 16:00)
Location: Orthopaedics/Traumatology, building section B4, first floor
Contact: Tel. 061 328 48 20 (Mon-Fri 08:00 - 12:00 / 13:00 - 17:00) or by e-mail: zmsi@usb.ch

Orthoplasty is a combination of orthopaedics and plastic-reconstructive surgery. The orthopaedic surgeon deals with the treatment of the bone, the plastic surgeon with the overlying shell of the human body.
The consultation is led by Dr. Rik Osinga (FMH Plastic Surgery).

Diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) is a serious long-term complication in patients with diabetes mellitus. It occurs when years of elevated blood sugar levels cause severe damage to the nerves (polyneuropathy) and blood vessels in the legs (circulatory disorders).

The result: even the smallest injuries heal poorly, they become easily infected and wounds (ulcers) can develop which can spread to the bone (osteomyelitis).

This results in deformation of the foot or toes (claw foot), changes to the bony skeleton of the foot (Charcot foot) and the death of tissue due to a lack of blood supply (tissue necrosis/gangrene).

Patients affected by diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) often require a large number of clarifications and examinations from various disciplines.

To make it easier for patients to coordinate these examinations and reduce unnecessary duplication of examinations, we therefore offer the interdisciplinary "Diabetic foot" consultation. The consultation is led by PD Dr. med. Martin Berli, Head of Consultation for Technical Orthopaedics and Neuroorthopaedics.
He obtains an initial overview of the individual requirements of DFS patients and then organizes further clarifications/treatment in close collaboration with the angiology, diabetology, wound consultation and dermatology departments. If necessary, the responsible orthopaedic technician can also be called in for an appointment.

Consultation hours: Wednesday 08:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00
Location: Orthopaedics/Traumatology, Podiatry, Building B2, first floor
Contact: Tel. 061 328 48 20 (Mon-Fri 08:00 - 12:00 / 13:00 - 17:00) or by e-mail: technische-orthopaedie@usb.ch

Wounds caused by diabetic foot syndrome often heal poorly and require appropriate care and wound treatment over a longer period of time. This is why our "Diabetic foot" wound consultation offers a professional and regular evaluation of wound healing and the dressing materials used by trained specialist staff, with medical support if necessary. The wound consultation takes place in close cooperation with external organizations, such as Spitex or nursing homes, which carry out wound treatment in the home environment.

Consultation hours: Tuesday and Friday 08:00 - 12:00
Location: Plaster room/Wound consultation/Podiatry, building B2, first floor
Contact: via Interdisciplinary diabetic foot consultation hours

People with diabetes need to pay particular attention to their feet. Nerve damage and circulatory disorders lead to a loss of feeling in the feet and wounds heal more poorly. Injuries caused by independent foot care can have serious consequences. Blisters caused by poorly fitting shoes or other foot injuries are also often noticed too late.
For our particularly vulnerable patients with pre-existing diabetic foot syndrome, we therefore offer the option of regular podiatry care by specially trained specialists.

In our consultation for technical orthopaedics, we treat patients who require technical orthopaedic care: these range from shoe insoles to special orthopaedic shoes, orthoses (support devices), prostheses (limb replacements), compression stockings and suits, walking aids and wheelchair fittings.

This consultation is led by PD Dr. med. Martin Berli, in close cooperation with colleagues from UKBB and specialists from the orthopaedic technology department.
