Hyperhidrosis axillaris (increased underarm sweating)

In the case of pathologically increased sweating, significantly more sweat is produced under the armpits than is necessary for physiological cooling of the body. Sweating can also be stimulated regardless of the outside temperature, for example due to stress or for no apparent reason. In the case of pathologically increased sweat production, ordinary deodorants are of little or no help. The choice of clothing is limited by the increased sweat production. Tight, colored tops cannot be worn. This is a stressful condition for patients, which is often clearly visible to those around them. This often increases the stress of those affected, creating a vicious circle.

Therapy Principle of action Duration of action Side effect
Deodorants with high-dose aluminum hexahydrate (15-20%) Inhibition of sweat secretion through contraction of the glandular ducts Several days Skin irritation
Injection of botulinum toxin A (e.g. Botox ®, Dysport ®, Xeomin ®) Suppression of sweat production by blocking nerve transmission 4-9 months Rarely allergic reaction
Aspiration of the sweat glands Mini-invasive surgical removal with suction cannulas 80-95 percent are removed, can partially rebuild Scarring, hardening of the underarm skin, wound infection
Excision of the sweat glands (Skoog operation) Surgical removal through incisions, identification of the glands under the microscope 90-95% are removed, can partially rebuild Scarring, hardening of the underarm skin, wound infection
