Center for lung tumors
At the Center for Lung Tumors at the University Hospital Basel, we treat patients with lung cancer and other tumor diseases of the chest. As a center, we combine the expertise of various disciplines from the diagnostic and therapeutic spectrum. We offer compassionate, comprehensive care with rapid diagnostics, the latest therapies and a wide range of studies.
Diagnostics
Pneumology
In the case of unclear pulmonary nodules , we offer prompt and comprehensive diagnostics in an outpatient and/or short inpatient setting. In addition to a functional assessment with lung function and spiroergometry, the airways are assessed in a further step using bronchoscopy. Supported by modern ultrasound and navigation procedures, tissue samples can be taken in a targeted and minimally invasive manner to enable a rapid diagnosis to be confirmed. In addition to the diagnostic range, therapeutic procedures such as laser therapy or stent inserts can also be used to optimize breathing and reduce tumours.
Radiology and nuclear medicine
Diagnostic imaging procedures routinely include computed tomography (CT) of the chest, often supplemented by positron emission computed tomography (PET-CT) of the body and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the skull. These examinations allow a precise assessment of the location and size of the tumor, as well as an assessment of whether metastases have formed in the lymph nodes or in the body. At the University Hospital Basel, we offer a comprehensive range of state-of-the-art radiological and nuclear medicine examinations with rapid appointment allocation and reporting. Interventional radiological procedures can supplement the pneumology diagnostics.
Pathology
The examination of cell and tissue samples enables a reliable diagnosis and precise characterization of lung tumours and is carried out by a specialist lung pathology team. In addition to microscopic procedures, the latest molecular pathology tests are used to detect genetic changes relevant to treatment. Our extensive expertise enables the successful molecular analysis of even the smallest tumor samples, including blood samples (so-called liquid biopsies). The clinical interpretation of rare genomic changes is carried out on an interdisciplinary basis at the molecular tumor board. Surgical specimens of lung tumors are examined in detail to determine the exact tumor stage and to assess the response to any previous therapy.
Therapy
Thoracic surgery
If you need a surgical procedure to treat a lung tumor, we offer you a center with extensive experience and expertise in all thoracic surgical procedures for lung cancer therapy. We perform minimally invasive procedures whenever possible.
Oncology
We know which specific drugs are most effective if you need chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapy. We accompany you during therapy with the aim of carrying it out successfully and at the same time minimizing the side effects so that you can achieve the best possible quality of life.
Radiation oncology
We use state-of-the-art methods to treat lung tumors accurately, safely and efficiently. Regularly used procedures include stereotactic radiotherapy, whereby lung tumors or metastases are treated with the utmost precision.
Tumor board
At our weekly tumor board , we discuss each patient individually and with the involvement of all specialists in order to offer the best possible clarification and treatment.
Clinical studies
At the Center for Lung Tumors at the University Hospital Basel, we are active in national and international research networks. Conducting and participating in clinical trials offers our patients access to new diagnostic approaches and therapeutic procedures, both in early and advanced tumor stages.
