Perinatal center - pioneering center in Switzerland

At the Perinatal Center Basel, we ensure optimal care for pregnant women as well as premature and newborn babies before, during and after birth: Our team of midwives, nurses and specialized doctors will accompany and support you during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period.

In our perinatal center, which is jointly managed by the University Hospital Basel and the University Children's Hospital Basel (UKBB), we combine the possibility of the most natural birth possible with the greatest degree of safety in the event of unforeseen complications or high-risk births. This is why our maternity department and neonatology department are located in close proximity to each other. Thanks to the high-quality infrastructure and the constant exchange between the various medical specialists, pregnant women and newborns can receive the best possible care.

Our motto around the birth is always: mother and child should be cared for together, separated as little as possible after the birth and cared for at the smallest possible distance from each other. The focus is always on the well-being of mother and child.

Together with the University Children's Hospital Basel (UKBB), the University Hospital Basel is the only university center of its kind in Northwestern Switzerland. The Perinatal Center is headed by Prof. Sven Schulzke. It consists of various disciplines and professional groups from both hospitals who carry out the interdisciplinary diagnosis, treatment and further care of pregnant patients and their newborn or premature babies, who teach, research, develop and train colleagues in the respective discipline and subspecialization.

  • In the Prenatal Diagnostics department, we use ultrasound, non-invasive and invasive examinations to investigate malformations and chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus.
  • Our prenatal monitoring ward for pregnant women who need to be hospitalized offers detailed advice from obstetricians, neonatologists and anaesthetists.
  • A high-risk situation during pregnancy can be very stressful psychologically, which is why we attach great importance to psychosomatic support during pregnancy.

Women with a normal pregnancy

We care for pregnant women with a physiologically normal pregnancy, i.e. women who had no risk during their pregnancy but appreciate the safety of an on-site neonatology unit and know that a pediatrician is immediately available in an emergency. For these pregnant women, it is very important to us to support a natural process together with the midwives and to intervene medically as little as possible. At the University Hospital Basel, we offer the whole range of birth options, including acupuncture, water births and midwife-led births, and we are also equipped with the most modern and innovative electronic aids.
