Cord Blood Bank Basel
The Cord Blood Bank (CBB) Basel is the first of two public cord blood banks in Switzerland. In public cord blood banks, blood stem cells from umbilical cord blood are stored anonymously for medical applications. The blood stem cells are available to patients all over the world for necessary therapies. In the case of public umbilical cord blood donation, the donor and recipient are not related. Allocation is based on medical criteria via the Swiss Stem Cell Registry (SBSC). Umbilical cord blood donations are recorded in the stem cell register and can be requested by a transplant center worldwide. There are no costs for the donating child or its parents.
The umbilical cord blood bank at the University Hospital Basel was set up by the Women's Clinic and the Hematology Clinic. The first umbilical cord blood donation was stored in 1997. Seriously ill patients around the world have already been treated with cord blood units from Basel. The CBB Basel is accredited by NetCord-FACT, the highest international quality standard for the collection, processing and storage of umbilical cord blood.
The umbilical cord blood is donated voluntarily by many generous mothers. Umbilical cord blood is collected after the umbilical cord has been cut and without altering the natural birth process. Donation is possible in the following Swiss maternity clinics:
- Women's Clinic, University Hospital Basel
- Aarau Cantonal Hospital (KSA)
- Women's Hospital University Hospital Bern (Insel)
- Women's Clinic University Hospital Geneva (HUG)
You are welcome to complete the declaration of consent and the questionnaire and hand them in to the midwife in charge when you arrive for the birth.
