3D Print Lab

other 3D objects. An innovative way for visualization and therapy.

The 3D Print Lab sees itself as a service provider and research platform for data visualization and additive manufacturing processes. We are an interdisciplinary team of surgeons and radiologists with the aim of finding new forms of presentation and applications for three-dimensional image data. The starting point for this is the long-standing expertise of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, where 3D models are already routinely used today.

3D models produced by us also support other surgical disciplines in surgical planning and are also used for patient education. In addition, 3D-printed image data is used in teaching and training.

As an institution within the University Hospital Basel, we are an active research platform and are available as a project partner.

You can find more information on the website of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

We support you from the selection of the appropriate imaging modality to the production of the final 3D model. The equipment at the Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine can be used to generate the 3D data. Of course, we can also process external data in a suitable format. Using state-of-the-art, medically certified software, we create the right model for you in consultation with you, which can also be sterilized on request.

Printing can be carried out in-house using various plastic 3D printers up to a model size of 30 x 30 x 45 cm. For complex models (e.g. multi-colored, made of different materials or ceramic/metal printing), we can rely on our partners with appropriate 3D printers.

Medical 3D printing at the University Hospital Basel

In August, the University Hospital Basel implanted an artificial skullcap for the first time, which was specially manufactured for the patient at the USB. After several years of research and development, the USB is the first hospital in Europe to successfully produce implants that meet international medical device standards using the 3D printing process.
